Detailed Itinerary

The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the only Kilimanjaro route with hut accommodations. It is the most popular and shortest way to the summit. The trek starts at Marangu Gate and ascends through rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert before reaching Uhuru Peak.

Day 1: Arusha/Moshi – Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Mandara Hut (2,720m)

Trekking Distance: 8 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Rainforest
Accommodation: Mandara Hut

Itinerary:
After breakfast, drive from Arusha (or Moshi) to Marangu Gate (about 2–3 hours). After registration, the trek begins through the rainforest. You will encounter wildlife such as Colobus monkeys and enjoy the lush vegetation. Arrive at Mandara Hut, where you will have dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2,720m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Trekking Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Itinerary:
After breakfast, continue trekking through heath and moorland, leaving the rainforest behind. You’ll pass through scenic landscapes with giant lobelias and groundsels. Arrive at Horombo Hut, where you will stay overnight. This is also where climbers on the 7-day trek spend an extra acclimatization day.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Kibo Hut (4,703m)

Trekking Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Kibo Hut

Itinerary:
After breakfast, hike towards Kibo Hut through the alpine desert. The trail is steep, with Mawenzi Peak on the right and Kibo Peak ahead. Arrive at Kibo Hut, have dinner, and rest early for the midnight summit attempt.

Day 4: Kibo Hut (4,703m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Horombo Hut (3,720m)

Trekking Distance: 6 km (ascent) + 16 km (descent)
Hiking Time: 7–8 hours (ascent) + 5–6 hours (descent)
Habitat: Arctic to Moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Itinerary:
At midnight, begin the summit attempt. The trail ascends through Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, then continues to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Spend a short time at the summit, take photos, and then descend to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720m) – Marangu Gate (1,870m) – Arusha/Moshi

Trekking Distance: 20 km
Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest

Itinerary:
After breakfast, descend back through the moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate and transfer back to Arusha or Moshi for a celebration.

Day 6: Departure or Optional Activities

Option 1: Transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for your departure flight.
Option 2: Continue exploring Tanzania with a wildlife safari or Zanzibar beach holiday.
